Abstract

Organizational life affects us all. Yet, we do not ordinarily reflect on organizations except as a means to an end. Modem organizations are dominated by command and control structures exemplified by the bureaucratic model, but rational models of bureaucracy do not meet the humanistic needs of people. America's business organizations seem to lack a spiritual and ethical base. They need to recognize the deep longings people have for community, meaning, and dignity in their working environments. This essay will discuss some of the latest thinking in the field of organizational development insofar as it touches on lessons embedded in the beliefs, customs, and traditions of Native Americans. Specifically, the essay will address: new science, spirituality, consciousness of the environment, storytelling, the collective unconscious, the power of visions, education, adaptability, systems theory, and entropy.
